Dr. Thayer began a series of experiments in 1850, with the goal of perfecting the technique of vacuum evaporation to prepare extracts in concentrated form. With the success of these experiments, he began the manufacture of fluid extracts.​

Over time, Dr. Thayer continued to produce his line of herbal extracts, which grew to include more than 800 products in the form of infusions, poultices, syrups, tinctures and wines. Prominent among the products was Witch Hazel extract, labeled as a “tonic, astringent and sedative.”​

Witch Hazel, better known as Hamamelis, is a flowering plant with medicinal properties, which has become the brand’s hero ingredient. Today, Witch Hazel is incorporated into the most sought-after alcohol-free toners and astringents, as well as our body washes and facial mists.​
